(LOS ANGELES) AUG. 11, 2023 – Disney+ composer and multi-instrumentalist Carla Patullo has released her latest album, “SO SHE HOWLS,” an autobiographical journey about overcoming grief, healing, and seeking adventure after a near-death experience.The album features an entrancing combination of howling vocals, orchestral swells, and electronic pulses. From the first few hypnotic soundscapes, telling the earlier part of Patullo’s story filled with grief, fear, and the unknown abyss of death, the album transitions to that of inspiration with a lightness that ignites healing within the listener. As the tracks evolve from hauntingly beautiful sonic environments into uplifting anthems of recovery and resilience, “SO SHE HOWLS” follows Patullo’s resolute path in seeking courage, healing, and ultimately, adventure.
“SO SHE HOWLS” features the Scorchio Quartet (Philip Glass, Laurie Anderson, David Bowie), GRAMMY Award®-winning performer/composer Lili Haydn (Opium Moon), and the GRAMMY®-nominated vocal ensemble Tonality.
“I was grappling with the fear and anxiety surrounding the untimely death of my mother, which was closely followed by my own near-death experience,” Patullo says of how “SO SHE HOWLS” came to fruition.
“SO SHE HOWLS” creates a force that will open any cynical heart with its vulnerable, raw, haunting, hopeful, and layered musical story.
“On the toughest day of my journey – where I wasn’t sure what might happen to me – I sat in front of my microphone and sang. Melodies flowed out of me, attempting to free myself of the concern about what might become of the tracks, or of me. These raw tracks, in fact, are what I ended up using for the album. I kept them instead of re-recording them because of their emotional weight,” Patullo continued. “Through this therapeutic process of singing and writing music, I was able to move past a dead end road block in my mind and see adventure ahead. That’s when I started adding healing frequencies to the later tracks and evolving the album into that of hope, healing and upliftment.”
Based in Los Angeles, Patullo has written scores for over 30 films including “Maxine,” a soon-to-be-released Disney+ film starring Margaret Cho; “Everybody Dies… Sometimes,” which premiered at the 2023 Tribeca Film Festival, “Magic Hour,” an upcoming dramedy starring Miriam Shor; “My Name Is Maria De Jesus,” an HBO Max Latino film; and “Porno,” Fangoria’s recent SXSW hit. She also fronted the Brooklyn-formed rock act White Widow, served as musical director for the legendary comedian Sandra Bernhard, and has shared the stage with Liza Minnelli, Rufus Wainwright, Justin Vivian Bond and many more.
Patullo is a four-time Hollywood Music in Media Award Nominee. And this past year, because of her work related to animation pioneer Lotte Reiniger, two of her film scores were presented at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Museum. In addition to composing and performing, Carla is a prolific songwriter and has written over 100 songs with placements on film and TV shows, such as the Sundance award-winning film “Spa Night,” “Teen Titans Go” (Cartoon Network), “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” “Skins” (UK), “Sabrina the Teenage Witch,” “L.A.: A Queer History” (PBS), and many more.
