SATICA Releases New Music Video For “Check$”

Since releasing her debut EP “Drippin'” with Moving Castle in late 2017, SATICA hasn’t stopped – writing for Tiffany Young (Girl’s Generation), featuring with Shawn Wasabi, as well as continuing to grow her own repertoire.

Now, in 2019, SATICA is ready for her return to Moving Castle. Coming from her reintroduction single “Take a Walk” (released 5/24), SATICA arrives with “Check$” (produced by long-time friends and producers, Mike Derenzo and Moving Castle co-founder, AObeats), an intimate and deeply personal snapshot of her life and upbringing.

SATICA reveals this on the new single, “‘Check$’ is dedication to my mother. As the daughter of two Khmer Rouge genocide survivors, I have watched my parents sacrifice their own well being to make sure I had a fair chance at a better life in America. Struggling with severe PTSD and mental illness from the atrocities my parents experienced, I wrote this song the same day my mother was omitted to the hospital during the summer of 2016. As a child of a refugee, this has been a constant battle growing up. That day, I had two options; stay home and weep, or write about it. So I decided to express my gratitude and also part guilt for choosing this unconventional life as a singer songwriter. If I could give the whole world to my family, I would. But for now, all I have is my love.”

“Check$” is accompanied by a music video directed by Tony K. along with assistant director Alex Oh. The video was shot at Belmont Veterans Memorial Pier (Long Beach, CA). It also features old film footage of Satica’s childhood and displaying a profound love for her mother.

SATICA shares more about her music video,“Because the backstory of ‘Check$’ is so sentimental and carried such an emotional weight, the director TonyKFilms and I wanted to capture warm and nostalgic feelings. It was important to me to have my identity and my childhood shine through, so we used one of my most precious items in the whole planet. An old VHS containing footage of me singing from ages 4-12 as well as old film photos of my family, and a current shot of my mom and I. Filled with wide performance shots and vibrant colors, it’s a window/frame into my upbringing. Despite all the guilt for choosing this unconventional life as a musician, it’s the only thing I’ve ever wanted to be.”

Recently, SATICA mentioned on social media that this is her most honest project to date, which we can attest to. “Take A Walk” highlights the honesty in her voice, telling her story with no fluff; an all-around raw take on SATICA’s recent reality. Her “Drippin’” era in 2017 served sensuality and the hope we find in our own youth, but this time around, SATICA presents growth not only in her singing and the production choices, but in the way she holds herself and her perspectives in these stories.

“Check$” is lifted off SATICA’s upcoming EP “dear april, ily” out July 26th via Moving Castle.
