Recent LA-transplants Spooky Mansion produce a soundscape of breezy, sultry surf-rock imbued with the passion of soul and the energy of rock-n-roll. Originally having their roots in the Bay Area and led by the rickety rasp of charismatic singer/songwriter Grayson Converse, the band is comprised of drummer Rob Mills, bassist Marty Reising, guitarist Charlie McCone, and guitarist Braden Lyle. Their music is nestled in the vicinity of soulful garage-rock, propelled by energetic guitars, nimble drums, and sweeping and invitingly fuzzy vocals.

The genre-blending rock quintet invites you into their expanding sonic universe with “Real Jerk,” the first single off That’s Me! EP out October 29. It’s accompanied by a music video animated by French artist Chiara Luber known as Bleu Garou. She gained notoriety with the animated music video for the song “Canopée” by Polo and Pan, which has 400,000+ YouTube views. Recorded by James Riotto in John Vanderslice’s famous SF analog studio, Tiny Telephone, “Real Jerk” has a more moody approach than their signature resonance by dipping into etherial guitars, floating bass lines, and introspective songwriting. Evoking the daydreams of summer and leaving behind the regret of squandered opportunities, “Real Jerk” reflects upon misguided choices and guilt-ridden quarrels with past lovers.

Here’s what frontman Grayson Converse revealed about “Real Jerk,” “I remember the 100-degree day in Cambodia when I sat at my kitchen table, struggling to keep my cheap nylon guitar in tune and picking out the melody for ‘Real Jerk.’ Out my fourth story window the jungle canopy extended as far as I could see. It was a great time to reflect and think about mistakes I’d made on the other side of the world, to come to terms with them, and to move on.”

Mixed by legendary Producer/Mixer Ron Nevison, “Real Jerk” follows the band’s indie rock 2018 debut LP Alright that took inspiration from the The Beach Boys, Big Star, Orange Juice, and Pixies to jazz musicians Thelonious Monk and Horace Silver. Since the release of their 2016 self-titled debut EP, the band has generated over 5 million Spotify streams with an average of ~90,000 monthly listeners. They’ve had the privilege to play shows and festivals across the country including Fisherman Village Music Festival, SXSW, Treefort Music Fest, Noise Pop and Underground Music Festival in Denver.
